The Multi-Engagement Model: Understanding Diverse Pathways to Student Success at Research Universities

Wednesday, March 26, 2025 Zoom | 1:00 - 2:00pm ET

Join us for an insightful one-hour virtual town hall as we explore with the authors the findings from their new report, The Multi-Engagement Model: Understanding Diverse Pathways to Student Success at Research Universities. Utilizing eleven years of survey data generated by the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) Consortium, this study provides a unique holistic analysis of the undergraduate student experience at large research-intensive public universities in the United States.

At a time in which American universities are facing political pressure and criticism on their value for money, this longitudinal study shows that students at major public research universities are highly engaged and choose different pathways to prepare for productive lives once they graduate. But it also finds that student engagement across key areas of research university experience – academics, research, extracurriculars, civic engagement, and career preparation – declined during the pandemic and has yet to fully recover.

Panelists:
  • Igor Chirikov, SERU Consortium Director and Senior Researcher, Center for Studies in Higher Education, Goldman School of Public Policy, UC Berkeley
  • John Aubrey Douglass, SERU Consortium Founding Principal Investigator; Senior Research Fellow, Public Policy and Higher Education, Center for Studies in Higher Education, UC Berkeley
The town hall will be moderated by Steve Dandaneau, UERU, Executive Director

Science Leadership with Shawn Bediako

Thursday, May 22, 2025 Zoom | 2:00 - 3:00pm ET

As incubators for the next generation of science leaders, research universities can - and should - lean into their leadership development role. But what does this look like in practice?

This UERU Town Hall will feature Dr. Shawn Bediako, science leadership advocate and former professor at the University of Cincinnati and UMBC. Dr. Bediako will reflect on how his unique career pathway in the academy, the federal sector, and science philanthropy informs his approach to science leadership. Dr. Bediako will share what he's learned about inclusive leadership across the academic career spectrum, and how we might work to remove disciplinary and cultural barriers to transformative leadership in the STEM education ecosystem. Group discussion will focus on how UVPs and other research university leaders can help support the next generation of talent and broaden the pipeline into leadership roles.
